Getting out of Google Jail – How to remove penalities
With some of the weird and wonderful things we see online every day, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the internet is a place where anything goes. Although this is the case, to an extent, many areas of the world wide web are policed by internet giants like Google. Having come under fire in recent years for not doing enough to root out fraudulent acitivity, Google have been working to clean up their act – and their links. This has resulted in a number of users finding themselves slapped with Google penalties for crimes such as unnatural links to their websites. Although Google are becoming stricter with their regulations, they’re not entirely unforgiving – and there is a way of having these penalties removed.
Keeping track
If you run a website, it’s a good idea to keep track of links as a matter of habit. Use a Google Docs spreadsheet to keep a trail of all your links as this will help should you find yourself with a penalty and needing to explain yourself.
Putting right what once went wrong
If you’ve received a Google penalty, you’ll need to send a Reconsideration Request to Google to ask for the penalty to be removed. Using the information from your spreadsheet (above), you can explain to Google in the request why you think the penalty is unfair or, if you have, knowingly or unknowingly, committed a sin against the Gods of Google, you can explain what you’re doing to rectify the situation.
Submitting your reconsideration request
To have the best chance of having the penality removed, you’ll need to be concise and professional when submitting your request. Your submission should include the following information:
The date that the penality appeared
An apology (manners never hurt)
Identification of the problem, such as bad anchor links or unnatural links
The steps that you have taken to remedy the issue
The steps that you have taken to ensure that you won’t repeat the offence in the future
A little bit about your company or organisation – this goes a log way to convincing Google that you’re a legitimate user
